A general contractor is a group or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction, renovation or demolition of a building, road or other structure. A general contractor is defined as such if it is the signatory as the builder of the prime construction contract for the project.

A general building contractor, or general contractor, is responsible for the means and methods to be used in the construction execution of the project in accordance with the contract documents. Said contract documents usually include the contract agreement including budget, the general and special conditions and the plans and specification of the project that are prepared by a design professional such as an architect.

A general building contractor usually is responsible for the supplying of all material, labor, equipment, (engineering vehicles and tools) and services necessary for the construction of the project. To do this it is common for the general contractor to subcontract part of the work to other persons and companies that specialize in these types of work. These are called subcontractors.

Building contractors conducting work for government agencies are typically referred to as prime contractors. The responsibilities of a prime contractors working under a contract are essentially identical to those outlined above. In many cases, prime contractors will delegate portions of the contract work to subcontractors.

Custom Carpentry Group Inc 212 Hillsborough Rd

Custom Carpentry Group has been building custom residential and commercial projects in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and the Triangle since 2001. We are passionate about our work, and particularly love the challenge of building complex custom homes, wherever our clients take us. Founder Cray Gunn shaped the character and integrity of Custom Carpentry, instilling it with a value for architectural design, community support and responsible business practices.

Three things have been our trademarks since the beginning: The first is delivering well-researched, well-considered estimates for all our work. If you’re looking for the contractor who you can rely on for a realistic view of what it will take to build a project, we’re the ones. Our second trademark is our insistence on attention to detail and craftsmanship throughout our projects. We have built our reputation by achieving the highest quality workmanship. Our third trademark is that, in addition to understanding architecture, we understand the design development and construction processes, and how to tailor every step of our service to meet clients’ needs.

The Process: The two greatest resources we bring to projects are the extensive network of professional relationships we’ve cultivated over the years, and our builders. Our experience gives us the knowledge to find, qualify, and supervise the finest local craftsmen and best quality materials, enabling us to build each project to the standards required by very discriminating clients and designers.

A collaborative process, with good communication between client and contractor, is key to achieving our highest goal—client satisfaction. Our process often begins with a preconstruction phase and preliminary estimate, providing a first look at construction costs and challenges. The next phase involves a thorough discussion of budget and design considerations, the development of the project schedule, evaluation of methods and materials, and a preliminary analysis of details and finish choices. Throughout every project, we provide alternatives and recommendations as it progresses, in order to keep the job on track, and to anticipate and solve problems before they happen.
